Book Review: Reading Reconsidered

Doug Lemov, founder of Uncommon Schools, made national headlines with his book, Teach Like a Champion.  While many books on how to handle classrooms exist, Lemov did something that few had done before:  he watched the best teachers in the country and looked for the common characteristics they all shared.  By doing the research, his book was based neither on theoretical beliefs nor personal anecdotal evidence. Instead, the book was solidly based on research that gives practical advice on how to improve practice.

On a cold snowy evening in a large urban district, after experiencing the most frustrating and disappointing day of their work as consultants, Donna Nicholson and Karen Harvey looked at each other and said, “Education is truly broken.” And then they asked themselves, “Is it irrevocably broken?” The perspective that prompted this conversation came from almost 100 years of combined experience in schools across the country and observing the same issues over and over. As their conversation continued, they wondered aloud, “Could public schools be fixed and, if so, what ten things would have to be addressed immediately to fix them?” At that moment their book Sacred Elephants: The Catastrophic Crisis in Education was born.

Can't Miss: AAE's 2016 National Member Survey



Earlier this month, the Association of American Educators (AAE) released its 2016 National Membership Survey covering the nation's most pressing education issues. Survey results show forward thinking on education reforms, particularly with regard to school choice, virtual education and technology, teacher preparation, testing and assessments, and workforce policy.

The Votes are in on Friedrichs vs. CTA – What’s Next?

With only 8 Supreme Court justices remaining after the unexpected death of Justice Antonin Scalia, a tie 4-4 decision was issued in the Friedrichs vs. CTA case today. The decision affirms a lower court ruling that upholds the practice of forced union fees.
