With Congress having reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act earlier this year, there’s been a lot of celebration from some camps and hand wringing from others over the future of teacher evaluation. There is a perception that life under “ESSA” will mean that states will no longer embrace the commitments they only recently made to introduce more meaningful teacher evaluation systems.

Can't Miss: AAE's 2016 National Member Survey
Last week, the Association of American Educators (AAE), released its 2016 National Membership Survey covering the nation's most pressing education issues. Survey results show forward thinking on education reforms, particularly with regard to school choice, virtual education and technology, teacher preparation, testing and assessments, and workforce policy.

The format of teacher training programs as we know them today first solidified in the early 20th century. Designed by academics who placed a high value on the theoretical and psychological aspects of the teaching craft, they emphasized teachers discovering their “philosophy of education” and spent very little time on the practical aspects of teaching. This practice lasted several decades. However, as teaching has moved into the 21st century, there have been attempts to modernize the way teachers are taught and trained. Several new programs are taking the lead with surprising results.
