Video: Social Networking Revolution
posted by: Colin | October 21, 2009, 04:01 PM

Is social media just a fad? A passing craze soon to be overtaken by another distraction? Or is this truly a new revolution in communication.

In his Pulitzer-prize winning book, What Hath God Wrought: the Transformation of America, 1815–1848, author Daniel Walker Howe stresses that before the telegraph, communication was never faster than transportation or how far away one could see smoke signals or flags (the book is a great read, by the way). Suddenly the world had to adapt to instant communication. We did it again with the advent of the Internet, after which information was more readily available in any time in history. Now, with social networking, personal connections and networks are proliferating faster than ever before. How will we change?

But is it really here to stay? Is the iPhone changing the world the way the steam engine did? Ignore our inherent bias (by reading a blog entry, clicking on a media sharing website, both of which you may have found through Twitter and will pass on to your friends on Facebook) and decide for yourself how important social networking has become.
