Unwrapping Lesson Plans for the Holiday Season
posted by: Alix | December 16, 2011, 09:47 PM

Christmas break is just around the corner and you are no doubt busy with countless parties and errands, all while trying to wrap up loose ends in the classroom. While many teachers see the holiday season as time of relaxation for students, capitalizing on the season's teachable moments can be memorable for both teachers and students alike.

Whatever holidays you and your students celebrate, there are resources available that touch on everything from the music to the toy industry, with lesson plans designed for students on all levels, and across every subject matter.

If you plan on incorporating the Holiday season into your lesson plans, consider some of the following resources:

  • The History of Toys and Games: This lesson plan can be used for students from grades 3-12. Using a timeline, this plan incorporates the history and origin of some of the most popular American toys. Students can track trends and discuss the role of the toy industry on our culture.
  • A World of Celebration: The lesson is appropriate for all K-12 students and incorporates creating a display of religious and cultural celebrations around the world. Students can share their own experiences with their peers and those of students across the world.
  • Teaching about Christmas: This article was featured in a 2010 edition of Education Matters and touches on frequently asked questions about teaching Christmas in public schools.

Do you have any ideas to share?
