Stranger than Fiction: Nevada Teachers Union Giving Members a Gift Card to Vote for Harry Reid?
posted by: Alix | October 28, 2010, 02:22 PM

It should come as no surprise that teachers unions are putting up big bucks to support partisan politics this election cycle. Along with countless millions, the unions are pushing their "get out the vote" campaigns in some interesting ways during early voting this week. In Nevada, representatives from the teachers union are allegedly handing out Starbucks gift cards in exchange for a vote for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

When asked about the cards, Claudia Briggs, spokeswoman for the Nevada State Education Association, said that the teachers union was giving Starbucks gift cards to volunteer organizers, not to individual voters.

From the second polls open, allegations of voter fraud and misconduct are immediately thrown on both sides. It's important to understand the law in your state. According to Nevada law, "A person who bribes, offers to bribe, or use and other corrupt means, directly or indirectly, to influence any elector in giving his or her vote or to deter the elector from giving it is guilty of a category D felony and shall be punished as provided in NRS 193.130."

No one knows who will remain standing when the dust settles next Tuesday evening. Hopefully voters across the country can participate in our democratic process without being bullied or bribed.
