| National Board Certification for Principals Debated |

Although the new certification had the backing of Secretary Duncan, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the National Association of Elementary School Principals, as well as $2 million of support from the Chicago Public Education Fund, many principals now remain in limbo as they await the board’s decision. "This is really devastating," said Jack Davern, the principal of Elon Elementary School in Elon, North Carolina, and one of the principals who made it through the pilot. "I had a choice of doing this or starting my doctorate, and I did this. I involved my entire school community and have had the support of my district leadership." National Board officials refuse to comment on the situation. Joseph A. Aguerrebere, the executive director of National Board at the time the program launched said, “There was broad support for the endeavor, including some from district superintendents who said they would pay for principals to go through the intensive process of becoming certified.” He continued, "They thought it would be powerful professional development and transformative for schools. We also had a strong cadre of nationally board-certified teachers around the country who were saying we should do this." Now principals across the country are uncertain if their hard work and efforts will even be considered. "They won't even talk to us," said Mr. Reed, the principal of Stateside Elementary School in Jacksonville, N.C. "It's like we got a divorce and I lost all my work in the divorce agreement.
