Chairman Max Baucus
Senate Committee on Finance
U.S. House of Representatives
219 Dirksen Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Chairman Baucus:

On behalf of the 40,000 members of the Association of American Educators (AAE), a non-union professional educators association, I commend you for including the teacher expense deduction in the “Alternative Minimum Tax and Extenders Tax Relief Act.”

Many teachers in the United States routinely use their personal funds to buy additional supplies for their classrooms because they believe the additional resources will be a benefit to their students. However, rarely are teachers reimbursed for these expenditures, making the teacher expense deduction a much needed tax deduction for educators.

AAE is pleased to see that the Senate Finance Committee has proposed extending the teacher expense deduction to the end of 2009. I urge the committee to continue to work on the “Alternative Minimum Tax and Extenders Tax Relief Act,” to ensure that the teacher expense deduction is renewed.

Sincerely,

Gary Beckner
Executive Director
