Education Nation Week Kicks Off with Teacher Town Hall
posted by: Alix | September 26, 2011, 09:25 PM

This week marks the second annual interactive summit, Education Nation hosted by NBC news. The weeklong conference is designed to host educators, parents, policymakers, elected officials, business leaders, students and engaged citizens in facilitating a national discussion about the challenges and potential solutions spanning today's education landscape. This year's lineup of education panels kicked off yesterday with a major teacher town hall event, and is set to include sessions on teaching and testing, the brain science behind early-learning and more.

During the interactive town hall, moderator Brian Williams released the results of an educator survey which highlighted that today's teachers believe a mere 63% of students leave high school prepared for college. Among the feedback given, teachers cited a lack of academic preparation, a lack of student motivation and a lack of encouragement as possibilities for the poor number. In just moments, the statement generated more than 1900 comments on Facebook, Twitter and EducationNation.com as thousands of teachers nationwide sounded off on the hot topic.

The two-hour meeting generated discussions on everything from innovations and technology in classrooms to teacher tenure and salaries. The discussion went completely viral on social media platforms. The two-hour town hall can be accessed online, with new comments being generated hourly.

New events and discussions are planned for the entire week including a debate on education reform initiatives with Geoffrey Canada, and a discussion about a Governor's role and responsibility in a state's education landscape.

Don't forget to tune in this week for some thought-provoking coverage on education.
