Department of Education Unveils Teacher Preparation Plan

Last week, AAE had the pleasure of attending an event headlined by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and hosted by Education Sector, which unveiled the Department of Education's proposals to reform teacher preparation programs and better prepare new teachers for the classroom. The event featured both a speech by Secretary Duncan and panel of experts discussing the state of teacher prep and the need for reform. According to the department, the proposals are to be a part of the overall effort by the administration to support educators and make government programs work better for teachers and students. New Requirements Mandate Online Testing

In the wake of the cheating scandals in high profile school districts like Atlanta, education experts are calling for a shift from paper and pencil testing, toward online and electronic assessments for students across all grade levels. In an effort to incorporate more technology into classrooms, the move is designed to combat cheating, increase efficiency, and phase out bubble testing for all standardized state assessments. Member Mention: Pennsylvania Educator Supplements Classroom Library with AAEF Grant

Mrs. Sherry Crane, a teacher at Wattsburg Area Elementary in Eerie, Pennsylvania, was one of the many deserving educators to receive a national grant from the AAE Foundation in June. Obama’s Speech to Schools Stresses Student Success and Jobs Bill

On the heels of introducing another jobs package that includes billion for education, President Obama addressed the nation's students in a telecast yesterday from Benjamin Banneker Academic High School in Washington, D.C. While this is the third time President Obama has addressed students in a back-to-school speech, the motivational talk took a political turn in advocating for his billion-dollar proposals to hire more teachers and increase school infrastructure spending. The Merit of Educational Games

Games are such a powerful tool in education, that it often saddens me that they're not used more. Especially as kids get older, we tend to think that we must be earnest and serious in what we teach, and many times games, if played at all, get relegated to review instead of taking their proper place as a way of obtaining information.
