Member Mention: AAE Awards Grant to Utah Charter Teacher of the Year

Last spring, AAE was proud to award a classroom grant to Ms. Elizabeth Eaton, the Utah Association of Public Charter Schools Teacher of the Year.  Ms. Eaton was recognized by AAE-Utah Membership Director Charity Smith at one of last year’s School Choice Week events in Salt Lake City.

We recently checked in with Ms. Eaton to see how her school year was going and how she spent the grant funds. This year, Ms. Eaton is working at Noah Webster Academy as a Coach and is spending her time mentoring educators.  As one would expect of a fine educator like Ms. Eaton, she chose to share her funds with her school.  She used her grant to invest in an advanced spelling curriculum for her school’s advanced students as well as organizational materials for the teachers she mentors.

Ms Eaton stressed the importance of the spelling curriculum, stating that the program “will help challenge the students that aren’t necessarily challenged because they are so bright.” During a time where budgets for gifted education are being cut, AAE is pleased to see funds going to this deserving area. As for the portion of the funds she shared with her fellow teachers, Ms. Eaton said, “It’s been nice as we are implementing some new procedures at our school [and I am] glad to have the money to help people out!”

While Ms. Eaton was awarded her grant for being chosen as UAPCS Teacher of the Year, the Association of American Educators holds a National Classroom Grant and Teacher Scholarship program each year that is open to all educators across the country.

Congratulations, Ms. Eaton!
