Union Snubs Teacher
posted by: Alix | October 07, 2010, 04:27 PM

This week as we are getting closer to the mid-term elections, I have come across headline after headline citing astronomical amounts the teachers' unions have spent on partisan politics all across the country. Grabbing headlines today is the story of an excellent teacher getting personally snubbed by the union all for the sake of partisan politics and at the expense of her personal achievement.

Natasha Cooke-Nieves, a dedicated former science and math teacher, now professional development liaison for 21 schools and an adjunct professor at CUNY Brooklyn, was awarded the prestigious Milken Educator Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award boasts not only one of the most prestigious titles in education, but a much deserved $25,000 check.

Cooke-Nieves thought she was attending a routine school assembly, but instead got a big surprise as she was awarded the Milken Educator Award, not even knowing she was nominated.

Sadly, the United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew was invited to the event but did not attend due to his vendetta against the Milken Institute. "I'm very happy for the teacher, and the work that she does is extremely important," said Mulgrew. "I didn't go to the event because of Mr. Milken's affiliations and philanthropic endeavors."

It is unthinkable and outrageous that Mr. Mulgrew would snub this deserving teacher all because of his dislike for Mr. Milken and his foundation contributions.

Schools Chancellor Joel Klein was disappointed, "I hope we could all come together and celebrate great teaching, and it's just unfortunate that everything gets reduced to politics."

The unions claim to support teachers. Here is another example of how time and time again they let teachers down, making decisions solely based on partisan politics.

Para educator

So sad that this teacher didn't get support for a their hard work. Being and educator is such a thankless job to begin with.
