Keep Kids Learning This Summer!

Kids may think that learning only happens during the school year, and that summer is when they finally get to switch their brains off; but as educators, we know that summer is invaluable for a student’s growth and progress. Summer provides students with ample opportunity for free-form learning and to explore their interests.  Unfortunately, many students find themselves stuck inside watching TV or playing video games.

For them, summer doesn’t result in additional learning, but leads to what’s widely called the “summer slump.” National Summer Learning Day, celebrated today, seeks to combat that very issue by promoting ample and rich summer learning opportunities for all students. The lack of summer learning opportunities can also result in increased obesity for some students and lack of access to needed lunch programs for others. To prevent this, the National Learning Association provides educators, families, and communities with resources to help them plan for summer learning programs.

Of course, it’s always helpful to look at what people around the country are doing. Here are some examples of how other districts are promoting year-round learning.

What is your school or district doing to keep students engaged over the summer?
