Top 5 Blogs for Personalized Learning

Personalized learning has been a buzzword in education for a while now, but this week it seems to have hit new heights. It seems as if everyone who is anyone had something to say on the issue. Near the top of the pack is this blog by AAE Advisory Board Member Michael Petrilli warning about the dangers of doing personalized education wrong. Petrilli reminds us that education isn’t just about learning skills piecemeal, but about being able to use those skills in the appropriate context and advocates for a “wholesome” and “nutritious” curriculum.

A curriculum that is content rich, driven by inquiry, and engaging is something that personalized learning can achieve. Schools like altschool, Big Picture Learning, and Summit Public Schools are all able to create a personalized curriculum that meets this criteria. New technology and innovative teaching techniques are making it possible to create positive personalized learning environments at the classroom level, too.

Of course implementing these techniques requires getting good information, and if you’re interested in learning more about personalized learning, there are a host of high-quality blogs to help you. Here are AAE’s top five blogs for personalized learning:

  1. Getting Smart: Getting Smart is a community passionate around innovations in learning across K-12, higher education, and post-secondary education.
  2. Edutopia: A comprehensive website and online community that increases knowledge, sharing, and adoption of what works in K-12 education with an emphasis on core strategies like project-based learning, comprehensive assessment, integrated studies, social and emotional learning, educational leadership and teacher development, and technology integration.
  3. MiddleWeb: MiddleWeb is all about middle school & the middle grades — with a sharp focus on teaching and learning in grades 4-8.
  4. A.J. Juliani: A.J. Juliani is the Director of Technology & Innovation for Centennial School District, and one of the authors of Launch: Using Design Thinking to Boost Creativity and Bring Out the Maker in Every Student.
  5. ASCD InService: Inservice is the official blog of ASCD. Much like a school inservice meeting, Inservice stimulates conversation. Posts cover the biggest topics in education today and offer insight, information, and resources that empower educators to support the success of each learner. Readers will also find timely policy updates, association news, and insider details of conferences and more.
