American Enterprise Institute Hosts Panel On Expanding School Choice

In honor of
National School Choice Week, the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) held a panel today on expanding school choice for America’s low-income families. Attended by Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Tim Scott (R-SC), the event served as a forum for the congressmen to unveil new federal legislation intended to encourage innovative state efforts to expand school choice without imposing new federal mandates.

The Scholarship for Kids Act is designed to grant a $2,100 federal scholarship to low income students to attend any accredited school of their choice. “Education equality is a principal of our country, and a right of every child,” said Senator Lamar when introducing the measure.

The plan will redirect 41% federal K-12 programs to the 20% of children considered impoverished. Senator Lamar continued to tout the merits of school choice in promoting competition among schools, growing career readiness in students, and increasing graduation rates.

Similarly, Senator Scott spoke about his own experience with school choice growing up on a military base.  Having failed out of high school, having a fresh opportunity to attend a school out of his military base zone allowed him to graduate and go on to start his own business. He also cited Indiana’s use of school choice to create opportunities and it’s wide success.
